Is a Taj Mahal day trip from Delhi worth it?

Yes, if you only have one free day. The drive is 3.5–4 hours each way on the Yamuna Expressway, so it is a long day — but you see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort properly with a guide. If you can spare two days, the overnight tour is more relaxed and lets you see the Taj at sunrise.

Private tour or go on my own?

You can visit on your own, but a private tour removes the hard parts: a reliable car from your hotel, tickets bought for you, a licensed guide who explains the history, and no touts or shopping detours. You also set the pace — stop when you like.

Is it safe to visit the Taj Mahal?

Agra and the Taj Mahal are among India's most visited places and are generally safe for tourists, with security checks at every gate. The common annoyances are touts and unofficial "guides" near the gates — with your own guide and driver you skip them. We are reachable 24/7 while you travel.

Do US citizens need a visa for India?

Yes. US, UK, Canadian and Australian citizens need an Indian visa; most travellers use the e-Visa. Apply only on the official Government of India website (indianvisaonline.gov.in) and check the latest rules before you travel.

What should I wear to the Taj Mahal?

Light, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and comfortable shoes you can slip off or cover — shoe covers are provided for the marble platform. Bring sunglasses and a hat in summer, and a warm layer for winter mornings.

What can I take inside?

A phone or camera, a small bag, water and your passport or ID. Food, tripods, drones, large bags and tobacco are not allowed; photography is not allowed inside the main tomb chamber. Anything else can stay in your private car.

How long do I need at the Taj Mahal?

About 2 to 3 hours with a guide, including the gardens, the main mausoleum, the mosque and the riverside terrace. Add 1.5–2 hours for Agra Fort.

When is the best time to visit?

October to March for pleasant weather; sunrise for soft light and the fewest people. April to June is very hot, and July to September is the monsoon — still beautiful, with greener gardens and fewer crowds.

How much should I tip?

Tipping is customary in India but always your choice. If you were happy with your guide and driver, give what you feel the service was worth at the end of the day — we never add tips to your bill.

How do I pay, and in which currency?

Prices are quoted in US dollars. For most day tours you pay nothing in advance and pay on the day; multi-day tours need a 30% deposit. We accept cards, PayPal and bank transfer.

Taj Mahal tour on a Delhi airport layover

Many guests see the Taj Mahal between two international flights. It works if you plan it carefully.

  • Airport pick-up

    Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Delhi airport (IGI) with your name, and drives you straight to Agra.

  • Luggage stays in the car

    Your bags stay locked in your private car all day — you only carry a small day bag into the Taj.

  • Car or Gatimaan train

    By car you leave whenever you land; by train you need to reach Hazrat Nizamuddin station for the 8:10 AM departure.

  • How long a layover?

    Allow about 14–16 hours between landing and your next flight, so there is time for immigration, the round trip and check-in.

  • Visa needed

    You must pass Indian immigration to leave the airport, so you need a valid Indian visa (e-Visa) even for a layover.

  • Not on a Friday

    The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday — check your layover date first.

Excellent tour with lots of memories to take home. Great organisation and guide

Based on my experience Rosa Travel is a serious and honest tour provider with excellent customer service. They responded fast and very honest about all my enquiries and extra wishes before the trip and incorporated all. The car was very clean and in very good condition and the driver also very punctual, reliable and trustworthy. Mr Mohsin, my tour guide was excellent, with local knowledge that only someone who has been doing this tour for almost every day in the past 10 years can have. Needless to say that I did not even see a queue. He also had a great knowledge of the whole Indian history and its transformation into modern society…

Insightful, efficient, and professional

This was one of if not the best tours I've been on in over 30 years of my life. Our guide Zameer was extremely knowledgeable and it was clear he had a passion for history. Great Trip! I went 4D3N trip with my family in December 2022 to Mathura-Vrindavan-Agra-Fatehpur Sikiri-Delhi. The trip was excellently planned by Faisal Siddiqui and not at all tiring. The driver Mr Khemchand Sharma ji was outstanding he was on-time in the entire trip, professional, safe and caring. Only one you want to show you Agra

Review of our guide Zamir. It felt like became our friend in such a short period of time. He was extremely knowledgeable, honest, kind with his time, took us everywhere we wanted to go. Other guides have been pushy, and can sometimes try to hustle tourists, Zamir rather shared our experience with us, and helped Shepard us through Agra and gave us the best areas for pictures, foods, and momentos for the trip. If I come back or have relatives going to the area, they are getting the high recommendation to ask for Zamir.

An activity-filled day

We certainly got more than we expected with this tour! The day started when we got picked up from outside our accommodation in South Delhi by our driver in a comfortable SUV at 6am and we got on the road to Agra. The SUV was stocked with bottled water and snacks. Because of the fog we couldn't see a lot but there wasn't much traffic either…

Epic tour to Taj Mahal

Very comfortable vehicle and safe driving. Drivers English wasn't always able to be understood although this didn't alter the overall experience. Stopped for breakfast at place where food was nice but place a little average. Tour guide who showed us around Taj Mahal and Agra Fort was awesome - great English, got us through queues quickly and took great photos. Didn't like going to marble shop and declined another selling opportunity. Yummy lunch at restaurant on way home.

What is the best Taj Mahal tour from Delhi?

For most first-time visitors, the private day trip by car is the best balance of time and price. Photographers prefer the sunrise tour, and travellers who dislike long drives choose the Gatimaan Express train tour. If you have two days, the overnight tour is the most relaxed.

Is the Taj Mahal open every day?

No. The Taj Mahal is open from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, every day except Friday, when it is closed for prayers.

Can I see the Taj Mahal in one day from Delhi?

Yes. Agra is about 230 km from Delhi. A day trip by car takes 12–14 hours door to door, and by the Gatimaan Express about 10–12 hours.

Is it better to see the Taj Mahal at sunrise or sunset?

Sunrise has the softest light and the smallest crowds, and the marble glows pink and gold. Sunset is lovely from Mehtab Bagh across the river. With an overnight tour you can see both.

Can I go inside the Taj Mahal?

Yes. Your entry ticket covers the complex; an extra ₹200 ticket lets you enter the main mausoleum, where the cenotaphs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal are. Photography is not allowed inside the tomb chamber.

Do I need to book Taj Mahal tickets in advance?

You can buy them online from the ASI or at the counter. On our tours with tickets included, your guide buys them in advance so you walk straight to the security gate.

Can I visit the Taj Mahal at night?

Yes, on five nights around each full moon (not on Fridays or during Ramzan), in small groups between 8:30 PM and 12:30 AM. Tickets are sold only by the ASI in Agra, one day before. We do not sell night tickets, but we can plan your Agra stay around the dates.

Can I do a Taj Mahal tour on a Delhi layover?

Yes, if you have about 14–16 hours between flights and a valid Indian visa. Your driver meets you at arrivals, your luggage stays in the car, and we drop you back at the airport for your next flight.

What is the best month to visit the Taj Mahal?

October to March, when the weather is pleasant. December and January can have morning fog, which may hide the Taj for the first hour after sunrise.

Are your Taj Mahal tours private?
