Jama Masjid ("Friday Mosque") was built by Emperor Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1656, the last great building of his reign. Its vast courtyard can hold around 25,000 worshippers, framed by three gateways, two 40-metre minarets and three marble domes.

It stands opposite the Red Fort at the heart of Old Delhi and is still the city's principal mosque.
